Have you been charged for Facebook ads that you didn’t buy?

Hey BigPay fam, 


Have you heard of the latest scam targeting Malaysians with Facebook accounts?


In your bank statement, it may look like you’ve been charged by Facebook for ads you didn’t buy. 


We wanted to let you know that not only the BigPay fam has been affected, but also other financial institutions. 


The reality is, any bank and e-wallet provider can be affected by this. 


But, we want to reassure you that we have taken all security measures for continuous effort to keep your BigPay wallet safe. 


We can confirm that there has not been a data leak or breach of any of our BigPay customer data.


We have observed that these unauthorised charges are being processed by Facebook without satisfactory payment authentication, which does not adhere to Visa's and BigPay’s aim to provide a secure payment avenue for customers. 


As you are reading this, we are working with various parties in the background to address this.


There are 3 reasons how this may have happened: 


  1. The victim entered their card details in a phishing website 

  2. The victim’s details got stolen from a legitimate website that got hacked 

  3. The victim might have accidentally clicked on a dodgy Facebook ad which autofilled payment forms 



If you’ve been a victim of unauthorised charges, here’s what you should do: 

1. Freeze your card 

Freeze your BigPay card from the tab  “Card”, then “Freeze Card”. 


2. Get in touch with us immediately

Here are some other preventative measures that you can take to avoid this from happening to you: 

  1. Disable autofill forms on Facebook by following these steps:

    Login to your Facebook account  > Settings & Privacy > Permissions > Browser > Autofill > Autofill Payment Forms > Swift left to disable it  

  2. NEVER share your one-time password (OTP) or login info with anyone. Not even with BigPay!

  3. Don’t use the same password or PIN for your account anywhere else

  4. Change your password regularly

  5. Don’t save your login information on your phone or browser

  6. Don’t use public WiFi

  7. Keep your antivirus software up to date

  8. Stay alert for phishing scams - Never use links emailed or texted to you, and make sure to check the email address and phone number. Scammers often portray themselves as BigPay employees to get your information by calling or texting you. Please take note that BigPay never contacts you via WhatsApp.



Scammers will always look for new ways to trick people. It’s a tale as old as time. 


The most important thing you can do is stay vigilant and practise some common sense!
