What does having the right money mindset really mean? 🤔
There are people who have lots of money but think that they'll never have enough. And there are also people who do not have much but are happy with what they have.
When it comes to money, many times it’s more about your mindset than the actual bucks. 💸
Your money mindset is your unique and individual set of beliefs about money. It shapes what you believe you can and cannot do with money, how much money you believe you deserve, how much you spend, and how much you donate. So yeah, pretty much everything.
We’ve put together 4 money mindset beliefs we believe are healthy and positive when it comes to money.👇
1. "I value what I buy"
If you’ve heard of Marie Kondo, then you know what we’re talking about. Just like Marie, we do believe it's important to think twice before buying something.
The next time you want to buy something, ask yourself these questions:
Do I really value this purchase?
Am I buying this to make me feel better?
Or am I buying this to increase my social status?
Do I really need this item?
It’s not about making you guilty about buying. If you want the item, then by all means go ahead! It’s about getting into the habit of buying intentionally instead of impulsively.
Once you value what you buy, things like budgeting and saving become a lot easier. By being conscious of your buying decisions, you get more control of your money!
2. "I deserve to be paid well"
Money is out there for anyone and everyone to take. Once you start thinking that you deserve to have the amount of money you need and want, you change your actions in order to make it happen.
If your day job doesn't pay you enough, think of solutions to get you to your income goal. You could start a side hustle, perhaps look into earning money online, or simply ask your boss for a raise.
Whatever is it, just make it happen. The first step to know how much you want to make monthly. If you are truly determined to realise your financial goals, you'll eventually get there.
3. "I save money for my future"
It’s very easy to not save when we have so many priorities in our lives. But that exposes your future self into real financial danger.
A healthy money mindset understands that by saving now you’ll have many more options and opportunities in the future. To have that, you need to start taking better care of your future self.
Saving for your retirement does not have to be complicated. Once you calculate how much you’ll need in the future, how much you’re contributing to your EPF and how much extra you need to contribute to your private retirement scheme to get there, you're on track for a nice retirement. From there, it’s just a matter of getting your savings set up automatically and forgetting about it.
Knowing that you're somewhat secured financially gives you the peace of mind so you can focus on living your best presently rather than worrying about when you're getting paid next.
4. "Time is money so I need to make good use of it"
A healthy money mindsets understands that time is the most valuable resource on Earth you have so you need to use it effectively.
Start by doing things as quickly as possible or only spend time on things that get us the results we want. Whatever it is, know that the worst thing you can do to yourself is to waste your own time.
For instance, choosing to do nothing about your savings now can negatively impact your financial future. The same goes for if you choose to laze around instead of finding ways to upskill yourself to find yourself a better job to meet your income goals.

Having a healthy money mindset takes practice and determination, but it stays with you for life. Habits and small actions now make a huge difference in the future (that dream retirement 🌴), as well as reduce stress and increase confidence.
