6 Hidden Gems in Malaysia That You Didn’t Know Existed

Travelling to a foreign country is an unforgettable experience that everyone should try at least once in their lifetime.

However, there’s so much to offer in your homeland that we bet you’ve never even heard of!

Instead of sticking to all the popular destinations that are on everyone’s travel itinerary (Genting and Langkawi, we’re looking at you), why not get to know your own country a little better by discovering these incredible hidden gems?

6 Hidden Gems in Malaysia That You Didn’t Know Existed

Kundasang, Sabah

Known as the New Zealand of Borneo, Kundasang is located at the foot of the majestic Mount Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in Malaysia. This scenic town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful untouched gems in Malaysia with its breathtaking views, crisp mountain air, bright blue skies, and cool climate.

At an elevation of 6,200 feet, Kundasang is the highest town in Malaysia. It’s easy to mistake yourself in New Zealand at the Desa Dairy Farm, where you can experience firsthand how fresh milk, cheese, and gelato are made.

Some other popular attractions include the Sabah Tea Garden, hot springs, stargazing, and Kundasang markets.

Pulau Sembilan, Perak

Blue tears, sea sparkle, bioluminescence… This mystical natural phenomenon goes by many names, and Pulau Sembilan is one of few places in Malaysia where you can witness it with your own eyes.

This ethereal glow is caused by bioluminescent algae that sparkle with the movement of the waves, just like a scene out of Moana. Pulau Sembilan is finally reopening after three years, so make sure you add this to your bucket list!

You’ll also find a vibrant coral reef and an abundance of sea creatures here, like seahorses, butterfly fish, bamboo sharks, and more.

Rainbow Waterfall, Pahang

Located in Sungai Lembing is one of Malaysia’s most spectacular yet untouched waterfalls. Rainbow Waterfall got its name for good reason. In the early morning, the sun shines through the foliage and gentle mist of the 300-metre cascading waterfall to create a magical rainbow.

The rainbow only appears for about 30 minutes, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled! To get to Rainbow Waterfall, you’ll have to follow a local guide to ride a 4WD through the jungle before trekking for 45 minutes.

Who knows, you might find out what’s at the end of the rainbow here. 🌈

Pantai Klebang, Melaka

You might have heard of the white sand dunes in Vietnam and Japan, but did you know that Malaysia has its very own white sand dunes in Melaka?

Located approximately 20 minutes from Bandar Hilir and the famous Klebang coconut shakes is Pantai Klebang. Originally created as a man-made beach for seaside property developments some 15 years ago, the project was halted due to environmental concerns.

Today, it is a picturesque spot of rolling white sand dunes. The best time to come here is in the early morning.

Kuala Selangor, Kuantan

Kuala Selangor is home to one of Malaysia’s best-kept secrets, the Firefly Park Resort, home to the largest firefly colony in the world.

Here, you can witness millions of fireflies lighting up in the mangrove trees. The best way to experience this breathtaking spectacle is by travelling along the river in a traditional sampan to reduce pollution and protect the fireflies’ natural habitat.

This experience is nothing short of magical. You won’t want to miss it.
